Hayley-isms

It was a busy day, we picked berries this morning with Marie and Ellie, then had a picnic.
Stopped and got ice on the way home. Made a batch of raspberry ice cream, a batch of strawberry/lemon sorbet and two batches of raspberry jam. Then I sorted through the freezer to make room for the new goodies, finding some pierogis to have for dinner.

She likes to share..

handfuls of dirt!

All in one meal

Needless to say, she was pretty excited about her new carseat.

oh yeah, moving in 1 month!
WSU here we come!

Strawberry Head

In the last couple of weeks we had the opportunity to go pick strawberries at Columbia Farms on Sauvie Island. We went on a whim, and got to the farm just in time to pick a flat of berries.
I named this posting Strawberry Head because Hayley would gladly eat strawberries and lot's of 'em for every meal if you let her, she went crazy when she saw all of them and instantly insisted she have some.

We are so lucky that we have been able to visit the Zoo two times in one month, and two different zoos: Point Defiance and the Oregon Zoo. Over Memorial Day weekend we visited my parents for a few days and then Skyler's family for a few days, which is when we went to Point Defiance in Tacoma. Hayley was pretty afraid of the Walrus. She absolutely LOVED the Monkeys. Pretty much begging to be in the cage with them. And at some points in her life thus far, she would have fit right in.

Hayley getting lots of loves and attention from her cute little cousins, Kylee and Ashlyn.

Last week we ventured to Pullman, WA. It was a quick trip, much of the time spent in the car checking out our new surroundings we will call home, next month!

Happy Birthday!

We celebrated Hayley's 1st Birthday with a bash!

Hayley was more into the tissue paper, but that's ok,
her cousins made sure the gifts got opened ;)

It was tricky but we got almost all the kids in one photo,
except Kylee (she escaped moments before!)

Posing for the camera much?

Hayley's first experience with patio dining, at Mother's Bistro!

By one year, she has already made her career choice.

Walk the walk. Talk the talk.

Hayley took her first step, followed by tumbles, at right about 11 months. Even at her young age her strong will pulled her through and is now walking EVERYWHERE!! Still bobbling around, and succumbing to crawling when she gets tired or feels she cant get to wherever she needs to fast enough.Today at church, I took her tights off before they were totally destroyed, and she changed her crawl so her knees don't touch the ground. (Preventing rug burn at this young age!) Thus, her bum is straight in the air, crawling like a little monkey. Pretty funny to watch, I usually just try to help her to stand up the rest of the way.So with progress comes challenges. We're figuring out different ways of baby proofing, moving things and such. It's fascinating to watch Hayley as she learns to express her feelings, frustration, favorites, happiness and curiosity. Some things that make her special:
  • The fact that she could and would if it were up to her, survive on grapes alone.
  • She'll bring you books to read to her.
  • Makes the MM MMM MM sound when she wants my attention while eating.
  • She tries to copy us, clapping, waving etc.
  • Thinks it's hilarious to jam her thumb up your nose unexpectedly.
  • Will take each of the books off the shelf, talk to it for a second and throw it behind her, then turn around and throw them the other way.
  • Is fearless and wants to try whatever we're eating.
  • Has the most cheerful countenance of any baby or living thing we've ever seen.
  • Sometimes says "Hi dad" or "hi mom" when we get her in the morning or when we get home from work.
  • Fascinated by the outdoors, first thing she does is point at the trees waving in the wind.
Happy 1st Birthday Hayley!

Into the Woods...

No, I'm not talking about the musical. Even though it was pretty hilarious when performed while I was in high school. After much deliberation and swaying back and forth with the plans I talked about earlier- we were able to make our trip to the Redwoods after all. And it was amazing!
Day 1:We left on a Sunday morning, traveling down the coast all day, sight-seeing and pretending to be tourists. We stopped for a cone at the Tillamook Cheese factory, going on down, we saw the Sea Lion caves (!!!) Newport, Gold Beach, went on into California to Cresent City and finally reached our hotel in McKinnelyville.Day 2: We saw a huge herd of elk just hanging out on the side of the road, and visited a couple of state parks. We saw the "Big Tree" and were able to spend time in Jedediah Smith State Park, part of the Redwood National Park system. It was amazing. This one was called "The Cathedral Tree" It looks like about 9 different trees but its really only one, people have actually gotten married in it.

Day 3, we went south a little, saw the Avenue of the Giants. Awesome, seriously THOSE are some trees. We found it so neat that because the soil there is so wet their root systems are really shallow, also their bark is almost fire-retardant. So they can withstand fires for the most part, only leaving them black in parts and hollowing them after time. Which is kind of scary since you could walk through the hollow part of a tree that is upwards of 300ft tall. The sacredness you can feel in a forest is so neat. To know that some of the trees had been growing there for hundreds of years. We finished our itinerary early and decided to venture out to see "The Lost Coast." A two hour ride on a terribly paved road filled with hairpin turns.

Also, wild turkeys and cows roaming at will on the roadway, all this to see the nation's largest stretch of un-developed portion of coast. (Black sand beaches too) Consequently since it is so under developed, there was no spot to pull over and take a brake, the camera battery also died that morning so we have some rather shaky home video shots of this beautiful beach. After the long venture to the Lost Coast we stumbled upon Fernville, the cutest old-western-style town I've ever seen. Complete with two token old-men sitting outside the Creamery playing chess...the Humbolt Creamery had some fantastic shakes too!
Day 4: We left McKinnlyville and took Hwy 299 to Redding, for the sole reason to partake in some In'N'Out Burger, (and to get to I-5, I guess). Can I just say, that was one of the prettiest drives I've been on. I took some pictures, but they don't do justice to the river and the snow capped mountains in all their glory, did I mention it was a perfectly sunny clear day, 70 degrees even! (Well not at the 4000ft we eventually hit but it was in Redding) We ended the day in Medford, Oregon catching a glimpse of the Temple before tucking in.Day 5: Homeward bound, driving up the 5, not nearly as interesting as the roads we had been on so far, we stopped in Winston to see the Wild Animal Safari! This was pretty cool, seriously giraffe's, peacocks, ostrich's right out side the window.
It was so nice to take a break from the city life and slow things down for a few days seeing some of Natures finest.
Moving on to more serious matters. Hayley is turning 1 this month! We can't believe it, (and then again we can!) remembering some of our early beginnings of parenthood in the wee hours. Coupled with watching her grow, learn and begin to mimic. The tender moments of seeing her take her first bite of real food, rolling over, getting chatty, dancing, and just this last week, taking her first steps.

Later this month Skyler will be going back down to Anaheim, California, this time for a NIRSA conference, at which he'll hopefully secure a Graduate Assistantship for next year. Like last year, this is an exciting time for us (in different ways this time around!) as we wait to hear back from colleges all around the country, potentially moving to an unfamiliar city this summer.
